Sounding Queer Asian Diaspora (led by Casey Mecija and Heidi Chan) is a DSF workshop research project that explores how modular sound synthesis can be used as a tool for queer diasporic expression and representation.
The workshops begin with an engagement in conceptual theorizations of diaspora, queerness, sound, and affect and subsequent workshops will introduce participants to sound synthesis through an experiential curriculum developed by the DSF working group.
Research questions focus on if and how modular synthesis provides alternative aesthetic frameworks for working with sound and technology beyond Western/Eurocentric forms to support traditionally marginalized communities.
